A Potpourri of Standards
ISTE Standards for Teachers
The ISTE Standards for Teachers conveys the idea that teachers will educate their students on how to become problem solving leaders in their local communities and throughout the world utilizing technology and proper character development. Teachers will provide creative opportunities for students to work individually and corporately to pursue their interests and solve problems they will eventually face. This will teach students to take responsibility for their current and future learning. In addition to providing opportunities to satisfy curiosities, students will have access to differentiated lessons tailored to their diverse learning styles. Regardless of the varying learning styles, students will be well-informed of proper technology etiquette, how to stay safe, locate appropriate websites, follow copyright laws, and respectfully communicate with other cultures. This involves understanding the problems people encounter in differing socioeconomic classes, cultures, etc. Not only will teachers supply occasions for students to work corporately with classmates, but they will also offer prospects for collaboration with different students in the community, state, country, and world. It is important for teachers to help students master global communication at a young age to raise up a generation of respectful and compassionate leaders. Teachers may utilize Twitter to help facilitate communication with children from other classrooms. Students can create accounts using their school email addresses (which will require only school appropriate tweets). By following their peers, students from other schools, classes, and countries, they will begin to master global connection.
ISTE Standards for Students
The ISTE Standards for Students conveys the idea that students will learn how to responsibly use technology to learn curriculum and interact with people from different cultural backgrounds. Students will become self-directed learners who set their own goals and perform self-evaluations. They will develop personalized networks and gain a basic understanding of computer science. Students will also gain a thorough understanding of the impact they have on the world through technology. The teacher will instruct students to use this power to complete safe, private, legal, and moral activities. After gaining this introductory etiquette knowledge, students will learn how to research and find credible sites. They will learn how to locate various tools that can be used to gather different information concerning current global issues. After mastering the research process, students will pose a question, use technology to search for answers, collect a variety of data on the specific topic, and create a set of steps that will solve the problem. They will learn to use visual aids when communicating in public settings. Students will use these visual aids and other technology to, "Learn by collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally and globally," (International Society for Technology in Education, par. 7).
Ohio State Standards
The Ohio State Standards for kindergarten through 5th grade outline numerous goals for students to achieve that revolve around the goal of producing citizens who can appropriately interact with others and the world, understand different cultures, and solve problems. The science standards all involve learning about the living world. The basic levels of science cover the crucial knowledge needed to be well-informed about the world and how it operates. Students will be introduced to technology and begin to interact with educational sources (i.e. apps, Internet, etc.). The history standards challenge students to learn the basics of American history and symbolism (i.e. flag design, bald eagle, etc.) while mastering the use of timelines and maps. The math standards involve solving problems and making arguments for correct answers as well as properly correcting mistakes with rational reasoning. The reading standards involve students thoroughly understanding text and answering questions. Students will learn to compare, contrast, and make connections between different readings and their personal lives. Finally, students will grow socially and emotionally by learning to manage their emotions and set goals. They will develop compassion for each other and build meaningful relationships.
State Standards for Technology National Associations
The Ohio State Standards for Technology prepare students for a future full of collaboration with people of different cultures from around the world. Students will encounter interactive lessons to learn the basics of operating technology and how to locate tools and resources online. They will learn how to navigate the internet safely and differentiate between reliable and irrelevant information. Teachers can promote collecting reliable sources and class collaboration by using Pinterest. The teacher can make a Pinterest board for each school subject taught. These boards can have worksheets connected to them and helpful resources. Students will contribute to and benefit from a class board created by the teacher. Similar to the Twitter accounts mentioned before, students will create accounts with their school email addresses. These Pinterest boards can be used to accumulate different research or journaling topics. Students will be expected to use acquired knowledge from properly interpreted graphics and text. Overall, students will use these technology standards to advance their knowledge and learning process while becoming responsible and respectful users. They will cite sources, follow copyright laws, and appropriately interact with others.
Standards Affecting Education
The three sources listed above affect "instructional design" by giving students more independence. Students are applying new information to their lives as well as pursuing their curiosities. The lessons presented are differentiated and students have more choices in how they will learn. As a result, students are taking more pride in their education, and teachers have the opportunity to incorporate more creativity into their lessons.
These standards are promoting "student learning" by providing concepts that they will use well into their futures. As an early childhood education major, I noticed that the concepts students encounter in the first six years of school involve basic information that will guide them through the rest of their lives in the world and at school. The standards are promoting modern subjects and new ideas that will be valuable in the future.
All three standards listed above are affecting "future-ready learning" by focusing on communicating with people from different ethnic groups, races, and socioeconomic statuses. The standards are preparing students for a future in an interconnected world where they will encounter a variety of individuals. Additionally, the standards are preparing students to utilize technology. As time passes, the world becomes more dependent on technology. Students will need to be well educated on how to address a variety of subjects using technology and how to troubleshoot as well.
